ABOUT US

The Laptop Guy has been in the laptop sales and repair business for 10 years in Columbus, Ohio.  We have several retail locations and over the years we have serviced thousands of laptops from all over the country.  We realize that for the average user, today more than ever the only real performance difference between a new laptop and a 2-3 year old laptop is the battery life.

Although the price of laptops have dropped in recent years, it just doesn’t make good financial or environmental sense to replace a perfectly working laptop every couple of years when a replacement laptop battery will have you powered like new.

So we decided to take our years of laptop knowledge online and have partnered with premier battery manufacturers in order to provide high quality batteries that use premium cell technology at great prices.  Our goal, is to provide you a quality product, value pricing, and a terrific buying experience, so that you will tell everyone about our little battery website.

TECHNICAL

  • How long will my battery stay charged for?

    • Your battery will stay charged any where from 1and a half to 3 and a half hours (if it's a normal capacity), or double that if its a high capacity battery. There are two main factors that affect how fast a battery discharges. The first is the age and wear of the battery, and the second is the way your laptop is being used. An older battery will not last as long as a new one, and a battery whose laptop is running a word document will last longer than that same battery whose laptop is watching a movie.

  • Why is the battery getting hot in my laptop.

    • Typically, batteries will warm up as use continues. However sometimes a faulty battery can get too hot for use. If the battery is bad, turn the laptop off and let the battery cool down. Remove the battery from the laptop AFTER IT IS COOL ENOUGH TO HANDLE and do not use it again, the overheating of the battery can cause other parts of your computer to break as well.

  • Does my battery have a "memory effect?"

    • No! The Lithium-Ion batteries that we supply do not have a memory effect. The memory effect common with NiCad batteries refers to the loss of charging capacity when you recharge your battery before complete depletion.

  • What do I do with my old battery?

    • If you do not want to keep your old battery as a spare, you should recycle it (along with any other electronics you don't use anymore). You can recycle your battery with us at any Laptop Guy store! If you can't get to a Laptop Guy store, call Battery Solutions Inc.! Their number is (734) 467-9110 or get a hold of them via email at csova@batteryrecycling.com.

  • How can I maximize my battery life?

    • The best way to maximize battery life is to adjust the settings in your laptop. The biggest user of energy on your laptop is BY FAR your monitor, and by simply adjusting the brightness, you can save up to an hour of battery life. Otherwise, minimizing the amount of applications running on your laptop at once is a great way to reduce the stress and power usage of a laptop.

  • How long will my Battery Last?

    • Your new batteries life will vary depending on the amount of usage and what it is used for. Typically, your battery will last anywhere from 600 to 800 discharge cycles, meaning going from charged to discharged. We like to think that every two years is a good time to replace a laptop battery to maintain peak performance.

  • Why wont my battery work if my computer says it's charged?

    • Many times, when a battery is first used, it can give false readings of being charged. Don't worry, your battery isn't defective, it just needs to get used to usage. If this is happening, just leave the battery on the charger for another hour or so. After letting it sit, remove the battery, then reset it into the charger and it should resume charging like normal.

  • How should I take care of my new battery?

    • When we ship your battery, it will not be charged. So the first thing you should do to care for it is let it fully charge. After that, let it discharge completely, and recharge it again about once a week for the first month and then once a month after that. This refreshes your battery to keep it in as peak a condition as it can be.

  • When I first get my battery, what should I do?

    • When you first get your battery, let it charge to full capacity. If it doesn't charge fully on the first time see this explanation. Otherwise, letting it charge and then discharge, or giving it a few (2 to 3) "discharge cycles" will make sure your battery is running at its optimum performance right off the bat.

  • How should I clean my battery?

    • Every so often dust and other things can start to cling to your battery. The most important part to clean is the connection plates where your battery makes metal to metal contact with the laptop. In order to clean this use a cotton swab and alcohol to gently rub away dirt and dust from the prongs. DO NOT USE WATER. And please, let your battery dry for a short period before you use it again.

  • Why doesn't my battery last as long as it initially did?

    • Li-Ion batteries do have a lifespan and over time they will lose their capacity to hold a charge. This is unfortunately an inevitable fact about laptop batteries and a big reason why we have this website. If your battery doesn't last as long as you'd like it to, consider a newer battery. If you would like still more power. Extended life batteries have more cells and therefore a longer life, some lasting as long as 6 to 7 hours.

  • Why wont the battery charge in my laptop.

    • First, make sure your laptop is receiving power from the outlet. Check all the places where the cables are plugged in (the outlet, from the outlet to the adapter, and from the adapter to the laptop). If those are all secure, check the outlet by plugging your adapter into another outlet. If it still isn't charging, make sure your battery is seated securely in your laptop. If all of these things are secure and plugged in, your laptop may have a defect. Go to www.LaptopGuy.com to see how we can help you fix the issues with your laptop and battery!
